Dog Gita Alerts Police to Injured Owner
A sheriff's deputy in northeast Washington, not far from the Canadian border, was on patrol in a rural wooded area when he came across a dog sitting in the road. Deputy Wright tried to coax the dog into his vehicle so he could find the owner, but the pup held her ground.
After failing to find a residence in the area, Wright returned to find the dog lying in the middle of the road. As the deputy tried to get her out of harm’s way, the dog trotted off up an unmarked dirt roadway. Wright, sensing something amiss, followed her.
As the Stevens County Sheriff's Office tells it on Facebook: “Wright followed the dog, and it led him to a small summer cabin. He began checking around the area and observed an elderly male laying on the ground calling for help a short distance from the cabin.”
The 84-year-old had fallen and injured his leg. The dog – his dog, Gita – is a 13-year-old rescue, who would only leave her owner’s side to get help. If she hadn’t, who knows how this would have played out. The man, with other underlying medical issues, had lain on the ground for hours.
“We credit Gita for saving his life that day,” the cops write. “The loyalty and heroism of our furry friends never cease to amaze us. Thank you, Deputy Wright, for going to the extra effort and thank you Gita for being a good girl and true hero!”
