Bobi, World’s Oldest Dog, Crosses to the Other Side
In May, we were wishing Bobi a happy birthday, his thirty-first – by far more birthdays than any other dog had ever celebrated. We’re sad to report that there will be no more, as Bobi has passed on after three decades.
“Last night, this sweet boy earned his wings,” veterinarian Karen Becker posted on Facebook. “Despite outliving every dog in history, his 11,478 days on Earth would never be enough, for those who loved him.”
Bobi lived all his long life with Leonel Costa and family in the Portuguese village of Conqueiros. Costa said Bobi’s recipe for longevity is attributed to “Good nutrition, constant contact with nature, freedom to discover his environment, consistent veterinary care, and love. Bobi knows he’s deeply loved.”
Costa elaborated that Bobi ate only human food (unseasoned), lived in a “calm, peaceful environment,” was never attached to a leash or a tree, and was very sociable, making friends with all kinds of animals, including cats.
Bobi was fortunate to have had even one birthday. Born in a litter of four, his siblings were put down by the owners, Costa’s parents. Bobi escaped this terrible fate by hiding in a woodpile, and the rest is history – a long, happy history.
