Celebrate Dog Day With a Pooch-ini & a Freebie!

It is unclear why there is both an International Dog Day and a National Dog Day. Wouldn’t one cover the other? But never mind, the day of the dog has arrived today, August 26.

What are we doing about it?

In the USA we’re doing it the American way – by selling stuff, especially junk food. Doughnut purveyor Krispy Kreme has baked up a line of doggie treats in doughnut form: Chocolate Cookie, Chocolate Sprinkles, Chocolate Iced … Wait, chocolate? Don’t worry, the Doggie Doughnuts are made with carob. They’ll be available all weekend.

Ice cream maker Salt & Straw has concocted four flavors just for dogs, including fennel, spinach cake, charred corn curd (?), and carrot-cake batter. “It's actually probably the healthiest ice cream we've ever made,” said co-founder Tyler Malek. “So you could eat it.” A 12-pack, each piece less than half a cup, sets you back $65.

Not to be outdone, Shake Shack will treat you when you treat your doggo. Buy your best friend a Pooch-ini (Shackburger biscuits and a swirl of peanut butter) and get a free custard for yourself.

Amazon has several National Dog Day offerings, including tee shirts for you, bandanas for Rover, doggie treats, greeting cards (“Best Dog Dad Ever”), and other canine-celebrating products. Chewy.com is topping up $100 purchases with $30 gift cards to honor the day.

Several branches of the Humane Society are reducing adoption fees for the day. In New York, the ACC (Animal Care and Control) is waiving adoption fees for larger dogs on Saturday.

Meanwhile Shoutable – a platform for creating digital billboards – is teaming up with HSUS to raise awareness for 3.1 million adoptable dogs around the country. For $45, you can commandeer a 48-foot billboard for the weekend with a picture of your canine. See shoutable.me for deets.
