King Charles Won’t be Serving Foie Gras to Ramaphosa

King Charles Won’t be Serving Foie Gras to Ramaphosa

The king of England has banned foie gras from all royal residences. Not a surprising development since, as the Prince of Wales, Charles had kiboshed foie gras from his properties.

In the UK it is already illegal to produce foie gras, as the process involves unspeakable cruelty to geese and ducks, which are force-fed until their livers swell to 10 times their natural size before they are slaughtered. But importing the stuff is not against the law. (Plans to ban it across the board were dropped earlier this year.)

PETA UK was so pleased with the news they sent His Majesty a “hamper” of vegan foie gras from Alexis Gauthier, patron chef at Gauthier Soho in London, which specializes in plant-based delicacies. Gauthier’s recipe includes button mushrooms, lentils, walnuts, Cognac and other ingredients that do not involve animal torture.

Next week King Charles will host his first state banquet in Buckingham Palace, where he will be feteing South Africa president Cyril Ramaphosa. We know what won’t be on the menu.

New York City banned foie gras in 2019, which was supposed to take effect on November 25 this year, but a couple of upstate duck farmers are suing – claiming hardship and that the City Council had overstepped its authority – so the ban is on hold while the courts sort it out.
