Stop Picking the Penis Plant
The government of Cambodia has issued a stern warning to its denizens who enjoy the great outdoors: Stop playing with the phallic-shaped plants.
The Ministry of Environment released the statement after a group of women filmed themselves picking the rare Nepenthes holdenii, a type of pitcher plant with a distinct, ah, shape. The video went viral, with the lasses supplying humorous (?) commentary as they picked and poked fun at the size and shape of the flora.
“What they are doing is wrong and they should not do it again in the future,” the statement read. “Thank you for loving natural resources, but do not pick the flowers, or they will be ruined.”
Dubbed “penis flytrap” by some genius, the carnivore survives in the low-nutrient soil on Bokor Mountain, Kampot province, by supplementing its diet with live insects. The priapic plant attracts its prey with a sweet-scented nectar.
The rare plant maintains its organ-ic shape for a short time in its life cycle. A not-so-racy video explains: youtube.com/watch?v=MT57xsrWgWc.
