Dolce & Gabbana Debuts Fefé Just for Fido
Dolce & Gabbana has just rolled out a new product called Fefé, a perfume for dogs. According to their website, Fefé is “an olfactory masterpiece featuring the cocooning and warm notes of Ylang, the clean and enveloping touch of Musk, and the woody creamy undertones of Sandalwood.”
There must be better ways to spend 99 euros ($109). Why would anyone subject their dog to such a thing?
“Overall, it’s a very bad idea,” Daniel Mills, a professor of veterinary behavioral medicine at the University of Lincoln in England, tells the New York Times. “Dogs have a fantastic sense of smell, and changing their odor can cause significant issues.”
The problem is that a dog’s world revolves around their sense of smell. They use their noses to navigate, identify humans and other animals, and sniff out potential dangers. Dousing little Fido with a new stink, even the cocooning and warm notes of Ylang, is going to sow confusion.
Dolce & Gabbana is not the only culprit. The dog food and grooming company Hownd makes a scent for lady dogs (“a supremely feminine fragrance with heart notes of sweet orange essential oils, jasmine, and peach”), while Peanut and Pickle touts a line of dozens of fragrances, from watermelon to lemon sherbet. Even the late Queen Elizabeth II presented a pooch scent in 2022, the “Happy Hounds Dog Cologne.” Really.
