Dog-Meat Farm Turns Humanely Raised Pups into Weiners With Natural Casing
Molly Elwood runs “Elwood’s Dog Meat,” a company that raises dogs the way grass-fed beef farms raise cattle: ethically and humanely, so that the meat is delicious and consumers can feel good about eating it.
“Our sausages are made in-house using fresh ground dachshund, pug, and lab!,” according to the company website. “We use natural casings on all of our links – choose from dachshund intestines or dachshund skin! – but you can also buy ground weiner dog by the pound.”
Keep reading (and reading, all the way to the end) and you see that Elwood is satirizing “humane” farms that really do slaughter animals.
Many people don’t keep reading, so they think the place is real and then contact Elwood with all manner of hate-mail. It turns out people are really incensed when they think dogs are being harmed. “This is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen,” grouses one commenter. “I hope you wake up every night to pee and stub your little toe on your metal bed frame.” This is one of the friendlier responses.
Elwood stepped out of character this week in an article for Yahoo!Life, explaining how her veganism springs from confronting a contradiction: she was an animal lover who ate meat. For a time she was okay with that, and was mollified by a documentary on Temple Grandin, the woman responsible for “humane” ways to slaughter livestock.
She did some world traveling that included adventurous eating – pigeon, rabbit, and eventually, dog. “I’d broken the Western taboo, yet I didn’t feel any differently having eaten a dog than I had eating anything else,” she writes. “But suddenly eating all animals felt different. I went vegetarian soon after returning home.”
She launched her fake meat farm in 2021 and has since expanded to other countries, which is to say the website is available in other languages – Portuguese, Danish, Bulgarian, and more. It’s hard to say if the spoof is changing hearts and minds (and diets), but the website and Elwood’s social media accounts have garnered quite a following.
Elwood recorded a rather strange meeting with her hero Temple Grandin here.
