Britain’s ‘Ugliest Dog’ is Actually Beautiful on the Inside

The winner of the UK’s ugliest dog contest is Muppet, a 12-year-old Chinese crested pooch from Peterborough. Bev Nicholson, the dog’s proud owner, says Muppet is a “wonky little rescue dog” that is “beautiful inside and out.”

We think the contest might be rigged, because in our opinion Muppet is a rather handsome lad. If you ignore the tongue perpetually dangling from one side of the maw, he looks a bit like Tilda Swinton.

Muppet takes the prize from the previous champ Peggy, a 4-year-old Pug and Chinese crested cross. Muppet must come from a solid ugly bloodline, because his brother Mugly won the Ugly Dog title in 2012.

“We didn't think we would find another dog like last year's winner, Peggy,” Matt Dahan, head judge and founder of the competition, said on ITV's This Morning show, which aired the competition live. “But Muppet manages to be both cute and ugly all at the same time, and we think he has the same star quality.”

Muppet wins a trophy for his hideousness, as well as a pampering session at a doggie spa: mud bath, thalassotherapy (therapeutic seawater bath), and a spritz of fragrance.

“Muppet loved his mud bath and apart from a naughty poop at the photography studio he behaved perfectly and the photos look fabulous,” Nicholson reported. “All in all it's been a great experience.”
